定边在唐朝叫盐州，是产盐宝地，北宋时期，由于西夏骑兵来犯，宋徽宗在此处设立定边军，并赐名定边，寓意安定边疆。先天下之忧而忧的范仲淹也曾坐镇定边，保卫边疆。定边鼓楼就在这边土地上建立，始建于明朝时期，原为玉皇阁，现今成了定边县的地标，是定边历史变迁，边塞文化，城池格局的核心见证者。
