Dirt rich: Saskatchewan’s soil is getting better
from The Evan Bray Show · host Rawlco Radio Ltd.
Saskatchewan farmers have dramatically changed how they work the land over the past few decades, with less tillage and summerfallow — leaving fields unplanted for a growing season. New University of Saskatchewan research suggests that shift is paying off, with farmers reporting a 41 per cent increase in soil organic matter. Stuart Smyth, professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Saskatchewan and one of the study’s authors, joins Evan to discuss the findings.
