Discipleship
What does it mean to truly be ready? A firefighter does not spend twelve years on the job and then hesitate at the door of a burning building, unsure whether he has enough experience to act. He trains, he runs call after call, and at some point he becomes the one others look to for confidence and direction. That same progression is exactly what discipleship is supposed to look like in our lives. This sermon draws a striking parallel between professional preparation and spiritual maturity, asking us a pointed question: if we would never accept the excuse 'I'm just not ready yet' in our careers after years of experience, why do we so readily accept it when it comes to our faith? The call from Matthew 28 to go and make disciples is not a suggestion reserved for pastors and elders. It is the defining mission of every follower of Jesus. The goal of discipleship is captured in a simple but demanding phrase: doing the right thing, for the right reason, at the right time. James 1:22 reminds us that hearing the word without acting on it is a form of self-deception. We are challenged to move beyond knowing and into doing, and to ask ourselves honestly how we are fulfilling the most important calling placed on our lives.
