Distanced Self-Talk | Curious Now with Jenny Rudolph

from The Center for Medical Simulation · host Center for Medical Simulation

As we learn to manage, we have to acknowledge that defensive survival circuits are automatic, and produce immediate behavioral and physiological changes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-center-for-medical-simulation/id1279266822 When we react, we know from the research that our management is not to prevent reactions, but rather what we do AFTER we react. We have to reset ourselves and repair whatever happened during the reaction. Deep breaths, half-smiles (reset of the facial muscles), and instructional self-talk work best--in Jenny’s case, the instruction is “use the skills you have” when you’re wanting to fight or freeze. It should also say “you”, or your name, rather than “I.” Workout of the week: Give yourself an instructional mantra that will work for you when you come to difficult situations. Jenny’s version is “use the skills you have.” Leadership Coaching from Jenny Rudolph: https://harvardmedsim.org/personal-leadership-coaching-with-jenny-rudolph/ #healthcaresimulation #nursing #medicine #debriefing #psychsafety
