Distomo Massacre 1944: Nazi Reprisal That Killed 228 Greek Civilians

from World History: True Stories of the 20th Century · host World History

The Distomo Massacre was one of the worst atrocities committed by German occupation forces in Greece during World War II. After the rapid collapse of Greek and Allied forces, the country fell under harsh Axis control, and resistance movements soon emerged in the rugged mountains of central Greece. These groups—most notably the ELAS partisans—launched sabotage operations and ambushes across the region, disrupting German supply lines and provoking increasingly violent reprisals.By 1943–1944, German policy in Greece shifted toward collective punishment. Entire villages were branded as “partisan strongholds,” and the population became targets of retaliation. Among the most notorious perpetrators was the 4th SS Police Panzergrenadier Division, a unit composed largely of poorly trained volksdeutsche youths led by radical SS officers. Their operations in central Greece culminated in some of the most horrific massacres of the occupation. On 10 June 1944, following an ambush that killed several SS soldiers, the 2nd Company marched into the village of Distomo. What happened next was not a military engagement but a deliberate massacre of civilians. Men, women, children, and infants were murdered in their homes, on village roads, and in nearby fields. Survivors later described scenes of extreme brutality—bayoneted infants, mutilated women, and entire families wiped out within minutes. By the end of the attack, 228 civilians lay dead, and the village was left in ruins. The Distomo massacre stands today as one of the darkest atrocities committed by German forces in Greece—an enduring reminder of the devastating impact of occupation, ideology, and unchecked violence. This episode is part of the series Massacres of Civilians During World War II.Watch the full documentary and explore hundreds of historical films at:WorldHistory.tv
