Distraction Robberies Target Seniors in Edmonton | Calgary News

Edmonton police are sounding the alarm over a spike in distraction robberies targeting senior South Asian women, with at least 20 incidents since late August—thieves use flirty or familial tactics to lure victims into handing over jewelry, sometimes dragging them into vehicles. No injuries yet, but authorities warn of escalating aggression and urge immediate reporting with vehicle details. These scams, already plaguing Alberta for over a year, involve strangers using hugs, blessings, or false directions to steal while victims are distracted. Police advise staying alert, avoiding close contact with unknown cars, hiding valuables, trusting your gut, and splitting jewelry. Community groups like Edmonton’s Hindu temple have also issued warnings after crimes occurred on their grounds. Stay safe: be aware, secure your belongings, and never let strangers get too close.
