Divisional round Recap with Alex Bleuel

from The Big D Podcast

In this episode, Alex Bleuel and I recap a memorable NFL Divisional weekend, which saw three walk-off field goals and one one of football's greatest quarterback duals. First, we talk about an instant classic between Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills taking on Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. In a game that saw over 800 total yards and 78 points, the Chiefs survive this overtime thriller 42-36 over the Bills. In the final two minutes of regulation, both teams combined for 25 points. We look at how each quarterback rose to the occasion. Allen threw for 329 yards and four touchdowns. Mahomes threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns while running in another TD. Both QBs also led their etams in rushing. After Buffalo went up 36-33, the Bills tried a regular kickoff, which the Chiefs downed in the end zone for a touchback. Instead of potentially squibbing the ball and limiting KC's plays, the Bills gave KC a chance at getting two plays before game-tying field goal. After winning the overtime coin toss, Mahomes found Travis Kelce for the game-ending touchdown - ending an instant thriller in Kansas City. Despite the loss, we share how Allen carried the Bills within seconds of a memorable win over Mahomes and the Chiefs. In two playopff games, Allen threw for nine touchdowns without an interception - signifying him as a superstar. After this thriller, we talk about the LA Rams ending the Super Bowl reign of Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Bucs with a memorable 30-27 win. We look at how LA built a 27-3 lead, committed four turnovers, and pulled together at the end. Despite the final score, we both believe LA controlled the game. We also look at how Tampa's injuries hurt the Bucs more than last year when Tampa was fairly healthy. With rumors persisting Sunday's loss could be the end for TB12, we both believe Brady will be back in 2022. Then, we look at this weekend's biggest upset as the San Francisco 49ers surprised the Green Bay Packers in a snowy 13-10 battle.I called this game the most befuddling playoff game I've ever seen! During the game, GB's pour special teams cost the Packers at two critical stages. First, Jimmy Ward blocked a Mason Crosby field goal to end the first half. With the Packers leading 10-3 late in the fourth quarter, Talanoa Hufanga returned a block punt for a game-tying touchdown. After another GB punt, Robbie Gould ending this game with a 45-yard field goal. SF quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo won this game with just 11 completed passes and one interception. While Aaron Rodgers will likely win the 2021 NFL MVP, Saturday's game was far from his best. While Aaron Jones and Davante Adams were target machines, Rodgers never trued anyone else and played far too safe. We then discuss the Cincinnati Bengals 19-16 win over the Tennessee Titans, which began this weekend's slate of games. Despite being sacked nine games, Bengals star Joe Burrow threw for 348 yards. Rookie Ja'Marr Chase caught five passes for 109 yards. For Tennessee, Ryan Tannehill struggled with just 224 passing yards and three costly turnovers. We both breakdown how Tannehill cannot carry a team like Mahomes, Allen, or Burrow. We also admire how Bengals rookie kicker Even McPherson continue his perfect postseason with four four successful field goals, including a 52-yard bomb to end this game in Nashville. We end this episode by briefly previewing Championship Sunday. While we both like the Chiefs and Rams to win, we differ on how the games will go.
