Djing with Luca

The first episode of Hobbyless follows host Ryan Paige as she explores the world of DJing with her longtime best friend, Gianluca, who has been DJing for years and is building a career. The two dive into Gianluca’s experience as a DJ, what performing feels like, and the deeper culture surrounding DJ spaces. Gianluca explains what he loves in music and what makes him tick, specifically how learning how has affected his experiences as a listener at events. Their conversation touches on the influence queer and Black communities have had on DJ culture, the recent rise of frat men entering the scene, and the differences between people who DJ for clout versus a genuine passion for music and blending new sounds.Following the interview, Gianluca gives Ryan Paige a crash course in DJing. He teaches her the basics of mixing music, explains beginner equipment, and shows how DJs use sound effects and memes to deepen the effect of the set and keep the audience engaged. The lesson is chaotic, funny, and surprisingly difficult, giving Ryan a first impression of what she needs to learn to pick up djing.The episode ends with Ryan bringing in her “council,” made up of her roommates and best friends Natalia and Talia, to deliberate and decide whether DJing is actually the right fit for who she is. The three discuss Ryan’s potential DJ name, whether she has the personality and habits to succeed as a DJ, whether she enjoys being on stage, and whether it's going to last. The council then helps pick out next week's hobby that Ryan will attempt as she continues to search for a passion outside of television and her bed.
