Do Catholics Have to be Nice? Actually, Not Entirely! | Fr. Chris Alar, MIC

from Homilies from the National Shrine · host The Marian Fathers

In this homily for the Feast of Saint Pius X, Fr. Chris Alar, MIC reflects on the saint’s strong rejection of Modernism and its weakening of objective truth. He explains that Christian love cannot be reduced to simply being nice, avoiding conflict, or affirming everything. True Christian love means willing the good of another person, especially their eternal salvation, and therefore requires us to remain faithful to God’s truth even when that truth is difficult or unpopular. Fr. Chris reminds us that truth must always be spoken with mercy, humility, and compassion. Fraternal correction, when motivated by genuine concern for another person’s soul rather than judgment or pride, can be a profound act of love. Following the example of Saint Pius X, Christians are called to reject a lack of truth while also rejecting harshness: true love neither sacrifices truth for niceness nor uses truth without mercy, but lovingly guides souls toward conversion, reconciliation with God, and salvation.
