Do I need direction? This is the daily service podcast with Anthony Anginan. You already have one. I already have one.
Even as I speak. The question is, where are you headed? Where am I going? Even as I chat with you tonight, I am in a certain direction in my life, whether I am aware of it or not.
Do I need direction? I have direction. The question is, is it a direction that is worth pursuing, that is worth continuing, or is there a need for me to redirect EF Schumacher? Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex and more violent.
It takes a touch of genius and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction. I remember I must have been 16 or 17 years old, and from a distance, my dad saw me pull out something from my back pocket. And he wondered, it always amazed me, why he was interested at that moment to ask me, son, what is that thing you just pulled out of your pocket? He was about 20 meters away from me and I said, oh, this one, dad, it's my pocket planner.
And this was his reply that my son is the key to leadership. And trust me, I never took out that planner from my pockets again. It was a few years after that I was in management consulting, then training, as I started my company early on after graduation, but was also engaged in media as a co host to my first mentor in broadcasting, Corina Sanchez, for a show called Magandango Magaport. It was at that time that I heard not a few voices questioning me and increasingly from my own system as well.
Why are you doing both, Anthony? You need to choose. You need to focus. I remember this quote, winners focus, losers spray S P R A Y and maybe pray too, cause of frustration or loss of direction.
But somehow, I don't know, perhaps there was a higher force that prevailed that I didn't even listen to, to that inner voice or perhaps that doubt within me not to choose between media and consulting. And over the years, and especially the past couple of years, at this particular time in our world history, this global crisis, I found out that those two were to become my distinguishing characteristic as a professional and ours as a company, that we are both in media and in consulting. And by doing so, in this time when everyone has had to shift, has had to pivot, they call or has had to change because of how things have gone from offline on site to online, right? And in the Internet.
It was something that was already in our DNA and we did it quickly and it seems like we've done it effectively. I share this because when I think of direction, it reminds Me that I already was in a good direction, career wise. I just didn't realize I was on a path, or in this case, in two paths, that a higher force, and God, if I may attribute it to him, was guiding me. What was setting me up for a time such as this.
I wanted to stress this because there is, I believe, too much passion, commitment, almost demand for having a clear direction, not just from ourselves, but from others. The need to be clear about your mission, your calling, your direction, your purpose, the things that you want, your objectives, your goals, your targets, your deliverables, your non negotiables. Are you getting tired yet? I do see the value of destination, but more so, I think, should we value direction?
It's not where I want to end up to be right, but am I at this point moving in the right spirit? Am I advancing when it comes to my skills? Am I nurturing the nature that is in me? Carl Rogers, what did he say?
The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction, not a destination. Do I need a direction? I already have one.
Now, is it one that is meant for me? It is one that is bringing out the best in me. Only I, and in my particular case, in connection with my God, one who I follow. Only we can answer that question properly.
So you are headed for someplace, my friend. Do you have an idea of your direction today? Are you experiencing a journey that you are enjoying? Do you need direction?
You have one. The question is, is it fulfilling? Is it something that is meaningful and worth continuing? Or is there a need for you to step back?
As we typically end our seminars or even portions of a training program, we step back and ask ourselves three questions. What should I start? As I look at my current situation, what should I begin? What direction should I be heading towards?
The second question is, what should I stop? What path, perhaps should I leave? What current commitment should I apologize for and step back from because it is not worth continuing? And the third question is, what should remain?
What is a good thing that I am pursuing that my heart is confirming? What should I start? What should I stop? What should I continue?
You do have a direction. The question is, where are you headed? Where are you going? Tomorrow we look at more detail.
We look at it in a broader and deeper way in what direction you are heading.
