As the international community urges the world to remember Afghanistan, Islamic Relief highlights the pressing needs of those that lost everything to catastrophic flooding earlier this year.Following decades of violent conflict, gains have been made in Afghanistan. However, poverty, insufficient development and poor security continue to fuel suffering – especially amongst the most vulnerable Afghans.The country’s poorest communities are often hardest hit by natural and man-made disasters. Many are still trying to rebuild their lives following widespread flooding and landslides earlier this year.More than 125,000 people across 27 provinces were affected, and Islamic Relief Afghanistan swung into action to help. Nearly 3,600 families received food parcels packed with essential staples. Hundreds more benefitted from hygiene kits and other essential items such as tents, blankets and cooking utensils.Over six months later, poor communities continue to require support to recover from the disaster. Many people still live in inadequate shelters, rely on contaminated water sources, and lack proper flood defence infrastructure.Families are struggling to restore their livelihoods, plunging them even deeper into poverty in a country in which some nine million people require humanitarian support.As Afghanistan witnesses a decrease in the overall amount of international aid, Islamic Relief is calling for long-term interventions to lift people out of poverty and to reduce their vulnerability to future disasters.The Do Not Forget Afghanistan campaign pushes for the international community to maintain its commitment to securing stability, development, and humanitarian aid for the Afghan people. The campaign is led by Agency Coordinating Body for Afghan Relief & Development (ACBAR) and is backed by a range of humanitarian actors.Islamic Relief has been working in Afghanistan since 1992, delivering emergency relief and development projects across the country. Amongst our most recent schemes is a project empowering women in Bamiyan province with access to education and learning opportunities.
