Do You Choose God, or Does God Choose You

Today, we jump off the Red-Letter Bible study because we started to wrestle with the tension we are seeing in Christ's journey. When Jesus goes to Nazareth, he refrains from showing signs because of their unbelief and that took as down a Rabbit Hole. You see, in the next part of Jesus' journey, he heals Peter's mother-in-law and then everyone who comes to him for healing. So why did Jesus hold back his ability to do this in Nazareth?  Well, people used to look at me and say: "You Hoo... come back" or "Squirrel!" but I can't help it. I go where my mind takes me. Today is no different. I've struggled with this concept for the past couple of days and if you've spent any time in theological study, I'll bet you've grappled with it to. I'm talking about the doctrine of election. And that's today's rabbit hole. I can't say that I'm completely comfortable with the conclusion... but not for myself - for those who will not ever find saving faith.  So I wrote this article after a long discussion on the doctrine of election. I could not wrap my head around the idea that God pre-ordains people to be saved. If you're hearing this, or reading this, you might be screaming - Reformist! Calvinist! But not so fast. As a Berean student (that's just a self-proclaimed title) of the Bible, you can't dismiss scripture because you don't quite understand it! I think we all tend to gravitate to what makes us comfortable. The doctrine of election did not make me comfortable. It still doesn't, frankly. My heart and my head wonders and grieves for the ones who have not responded to the Word of God. How can God choose only some... or is it that only some choose Him?
