In chapter 15 of Matthew, we see the ever-growing estrangement between Jesus and the religious elite of his day. The haters had already determined they would do what ever was necessary to eliminate Him. So, there was urgency in the air for Jesus to help His followers understand His mission and teachings. For close to two years they heard him teach and preach. And yet they still had trouble breaking free from their religious traditions and legalism. They had yet separated themselves from their myopic cultural view of themselves and their mission. It’s not enough to be along for the ride, Jesus wants His followers to understand His Word and apply it to their lives. There was so much at risk. It’s time they get it.
