DOAD #42: Studio dance vs. school dance balance
from Dad of a Dancer Hosted by Brian Johnson
Hi friends, I’m trying to answer a question I have little experience with: what is the right balance between studio dance commitments and school dance program commitments? This week Atti walked into his sophomore year at his performing arts high school with a full studio dance card (he recently joined a new studio and has a slew of new group pieces to learn - plus some ensembles and solos) and made what I think is a sensible call to skip auditioning for his school’s fall dance production. Then he came home feeling bad about it. So this episode is less advice and more me thinking out loud about a question I never had to answer as a kid: can a fiercely competitive dancer take a smaller role, on purpose, and actually be happy about it?
