Entre 1964 y 1983,a se citó la cizalladura del viento a baja altura en por lo menos 28 accidentes o incidentes de grandes aeronaves de transporte en los que, en conjunto, hubo más de 500 muertos y 200 heridos. La comunidad aeronáutica es cada vez más consciente del carácter peligroso e insidioso de este fenómeno, lo cual se pone de manifiesto en el hecho de que el Consejo de la OACI lo consideró entonces como uno de los problemas técnicos más importantes con que se enfrentaba la aviación.
