Before EMDR can ever help the past heal, the present has to hold even a small sense of safety or worth. Clients who’ve lived through chronic relational trauma often don’t have access to beliefs like “I matter,” “I’m lovable,” or “I can be safe,” even on a cognitive level. When that adaptive information isn’t available in the present, there’s nothing for the brain to integrate back into those old memories. That’s why EMDR looks different—and often slower—for clients navigating attachment wounds. Therapy begins by building that foundation first: resourcing, identifying moments of connection, strengthening internal safety, and allowing the nervous system to experience what it never had access to before.
