Does It Matter How African Americans Psychologically View Africa?

For years in AMERICAN MEDIA the continent of AFRICA has been shown as a place of underdevelopment, disease, and famine to the point where many AFRICAN AMERICANS only view it negatively. MALCOLM X once said, YOU CAN'T HATE THE ROOTS OF A TREE, AND NOT HATE THE ROOTS. If this is true, does it behoove us specifically as BLACK PEOPLE to learn more about our origins, or are we too far removed (400 years) to concern ourselves with this endeavor?  Are BLACK CHILDREN placed at a disadvantage by only learning AMERICAN HISTORY, or do some AFRICAN AMERICANS seek out & romanticize AFRICAN HERITAGE just to feel good about themselves, to cover up their own lack of production in their own lives? Also, will learning about AFRICA in a positive light change the relationship dynamics between AMERICAN DESCEDANTS OF SLAVES (ADOS) & AFRICANS or is too late to bridge that gap?
