Does The Bible Really Say That — Part 2
from Harvest Worship Center · host Lead Pastor — Phillip Minter
What if the struggles that feel like they are crushing us are actually the very things designed to draw us closer to God? This message takes on one of the most widely repeated phrases in Christian culture; the idea that God will never give us more than we can handle and holds it up to the light of Scripture. What we find is both surprising and deeply freeing. The Apostle Paul, in 2 Corinthians 1:8-10, openly admits that he and his companions were so overwhelmed by their circumstances that they despaired of life itself, feeling as though they had received a sentence of death. Far from being a failure of faith, Paul reveals that this crushing weight served a profound purpose: to drive them away from self-reliance and into complete dependence on God. The central lesson is not that God calibrates our burdens to match our strength, but rather that He intentionally allows burdens beyond our strength so that His power can be made perfect in our weakness. This reframes how we understand suffering, waiting, and surrender, not as signs that God has abandoned us, but as invitations to experience a level of His strength we could never access on our own.
