Does the USMNT really matter to American soccer?

Richard Farley suddenly has a lot of free time so he and Jeremiah decided to record a podcast about something they were discussing on Twitter. Effectively they argue that the fortunes of the USMNT are largely divorced from the long arc of American soccer at large.
