Does Your Life Look Free?

from The Salty Pastor Hosted by Dr. Douglas Peake

You were called to be free. That's not a theological nicety — it's the direct language of Galatians 5: you were called to be free. Not called to survive, not called to manage your shortcomings, not called to follow enough rules to stay in good standing. Called to be free. The question that follows is simple and uncomfortable: does your life actually look like it? Understanding how you're wired matters here. The outward things our culture offers — conquest, approval, belonging, certainty, control — don't actually fulfill the inner spiritual longings they're aimed at. They mimic them. And because the mimicry is convincing, it keeps people stuck, doing the same things over and over while moving further from the life they were meant to live. The flesh pulls toward what feels immediately satisfying. The Spirit pulls toward something deeper, slower, and ultimately far more real. The list of what the flesh produces — Paul rattles it off in Galatians 5 — sounds like a description of modern culture. And the key misunderstanding is treating it as a checklist for who's in and who's out of the kingdom of God. Galatians has already made clear that nothing you do wins the grace of God, which means nothing you do loses it either. What Paul is saying is that when you live from the flesh rather than the Spirit, you short-circuit everything that Jesus's presence in you was meant to produce. You cut yourself off from the inheritance you already have. Support the mission of the Salty Pastor ministry! Discussion Questions If someone watched your life for a month without knowing your beliefs, would they say your life looks free? What would they observe? Which outward cultural drives — approval, conquest, control, belonging — do you find yourself most pulled toward when things get hard? What inner need are you trying to meet with that? The works of the flesh in Galatians 5 aren't a list of things that disqualify you — they're a description of what life looks like when you're not living from the Spirit. Do you see any of them at work in your life right now?
