Doing Well by Doing Good

from Failure - the Podcast · host David Powsner

“Conversations” are a favorite topic of this podcast. This includes not only those attendant to new product introductions, but also those between entrepreneurs and investors. Today’s episode delves into both. Our guest, Brandale Randolph, is doing well by doing good. His business, 1854 Cycling Company, is built around the notion that a local business operating in the heart of the city can end recidivism through the sale and maintenance of premium bicycles. Join us in a digression-filled discussion with Brandale and learn how an entrepreneur’s vision, when shaped and fueled by conversations with customer and investor marketplaces, can drive potentially exponential business growth.

Conversations are a favorite topic of this podcast. Sure, we try our best to have them with our guests (... though, some would argue that our incessant digressions prevent anything but ...), but what we mean here are conversations between entrepreneurs and the marketplace. This includes not only “conversations” attendant to new product introductions — to wit, will customers eat the proverbial dog food or spurn it and, if the latter, will the seller keep the exchange alive by reworking its offering — but also those between entrepreneurs and investors. In our September 27 episode, we focused on the former and learned about J.D. Power, a data analytics firm specializing in surveys that speed conversations with established players. And, in our May 11 episode, we heard from an entrepreneur frustrated with the quality of conversations in the fund-raising marketplace. Today’s episode delves further into both types of conversations. Our guest, Brandale Randolph, is doing well by doing good. His business, 1854 Cycling Company, is built around the notion that a local business operating in the heart of the city can end recidivism through the sale and maintenance of premium bicycles. As Brandale says on his company’s website “We do more than just make quality products. We make a difference.” Join us in a digression-filled discussion with Brandale and learn how an entrepreneur’s vision, when shaped and fueled by conversations with customer and investor marketplaces, can drive potentially exponential business growth. P.S., Lest we forget…. Brandale had at least one good failure along the way. While something catastrophic would have been more interesting, his was pivot-inducing. We can live with that.
