Don't Be Weird About New York City

from Don't Be Weird About It

Hey!!!! We’re podcasting here!!!!Pour yourself a cup of cawfee and you better hope the cheese is chopped because today’s episode is all about the greatest city in the world: New York!!! That’s right, we’re in an Empire State of mind as we chat about our first visits to the Big Apple, the appropriate speed for walking, subway etiquette, and much more. Ok hold on, I don’t know if anyone even reads these so if you do, can we talk? I thought it would be funny to include a bunch of New York themed songs in this episode description. Cute, right? So I pull up the lyrics of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind” as a matter of course. I know them by heart! I’ve always known them! I’ve just never really thought about them… Overall, the sentiment of the beginning of the song is just like “yeah you might want to vacation somewhere relaxing and pretty, but I love the grittiness of New York”. Cool. Totally get the point. I can get behind that. But then the bridge gets a little weird and I’ve never thought about this. The lyrics are:It was so easy living day by day (sure)Out of touch with the rhythm and blues (ok this could allude to being in suburban America, away from the hustle and bustle of the city… sure)But now I need a little give and take (cool… and what is the give and take?)THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE DAILY NEWS“The New York Times. The Daily News”. He says. Just out of nowhere. The New York Times. The Daily News. Names two publications. What do these newspapers have to do with anything besides being based in New York? Do they provide the give and take? And then the best part is he repeats it again later in the song and then just absolutely wails “OHHHHH” right after that??? I mean????? I guess this is the guy who wrote “We Didn’t Start The Fire” which is literally just a list of things. So simply naming things isn’t far off for him, but I’ve really just been ignoring the lyrics “The New York Times. The Daily News.” my entire life and letting the saxophone solos and complicated piano trills lull me into a state of adoration. And you know what!!! If you ever see me in public and this song is playing, pretend you never read this and join me in singing “The New York Times. The Daily News.” As loud as we possibly can.Okay anyways don’t be weird about it, click play, and START SPREADING THE NEWS*!
