In an article by https://www.earthday.org/dont-let-consumerism-consume-your-holiday/ The study published in the Journal of Industrial Ecology showed that individual household consumption — not businesses, government or industries — accounts for more than 60% of global greenhouse gas emissions and 50%–80% of total land, material and water use in 2019. The urge to keep up with the Joneses is turning out to be a zero sum game for the planet and also a horrible habit for our mental health. The studies also found that "A lot of today’s materialism may even be chalked up to a desperate attempt to escape from enormous, existential problems and stresses. In other words, these short-term pleasures may be a convenient distraction from long-term anxieties." So we are going to get into the weeds with this one,and try to get some clarity on how to fight off the ghost of Christmas debt.
