Athalia Ponsell Lindsley was a well-known American model, Broadway dancer, and political activist who also appeared on the television show Winner Take All. She was born in Toledo, Ohio, to a wealthy family and spent a significant portion of her life in New York City.Lindsley made an unsuccessful bid for state senator and planned to run for a seat on the St. Johns County, Florida Commission. During a county meeting in October 1973, she mentioned that her life had been threatened.On January 23, 1974, Lindsley was attacked on the front steps of her home by a white middle-aged male wearing a white dress shirt and dark dress pants. She was struck nine times with a machete and nearly decapitated. The perpetrator was never identified, and Stanford, who was indicted, was acquitted after a two-hour jury deliberation. Critics have accused the police of botching the investigation and tainting evidence. Her murder occurred four months after she married James "Jinx" Lindsley, a former mayor of St. Augustine and successful real estate agent.The murder remains unsolved to this day.
