Today if you will hear his voice, don't harden your hearts, as in the rebellion — where your fathers saw the works of God for forty years and still did not enter his rest. Beware, brothers, lest there be in any one of you an evil heart of unbelief, in falling away from the living God.The author names what produced the wilderness failure: not rebellion in the dramatic sense, but the deceitfulness of sin — the quiet, gradual work of a heart that stops trusting and starts finding reasonable explanations for why the promises cannot be what they claimed. The antidote is communal and daily: exhort one another day by day, so long as it is called today.And the retrospective at the close is devastating in its simplicity. Who rebelled? All those who came out of Egypt. Who fell in the wilderness? Those who sinned. Why couldn't they enter? Because of unbelief.Seeing the works of God for forty years was not enough. The deceitfulness of sin hardened hearts that had witnessed everything.
