Don’t Let Go: Strengthen Your Hands Before You Fall Away

In this message from Hebrews 12:12–24, we continue through Hebrews 12 and receive a powerful word of encouragement for the Christian life. After hearing that life in Christ is a race that requires endurance, discipline, and focus, we are now told: “Strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees.” This sermon unpacks three major themes. First, believers are called to be strengthened and encouraged in the race. Spiritual weakness is dangerous because it affects our ability to endure, overcome obstacles, and finish well. Just as weak grip strength can point to deeper physical decline, weak spiritual grip can reveal spiritual exhaustion or drift. The answer is not giving up, but looking to Jesus, receiving God’s discipline rightly, and being strengthened by His presence and promises. Second, believers are called to pursue peace and holiness, both individually and corporately. The church is a body, and what one person does affects the whole group. We are to help restore one another, bear one another’s burdens, seek peace, and watch carefully so that no one falls short of grace, drifts away, or allows bitterness to poison the body. Holiness is not merely external behavior; it is the result of the Holy Spirit dwelling within the believer. Third, this passage reminds us that we have come to a new and better covenant. Hebrews contrasts the terrifying scene of Mount Sinai under the old covenant with the glorious invitation of Mount Zion under the new covenant. Through Jesus Christ—the Mediator of the new covenant—we can approach God directly, live under grace, and stand in the confidence of a better promise. This is a message for weary believers, discouraged hearts, and the whole church: don’t let go.
