“Religion is the opiate of the masses” is a quote from Karl Marx "Die Religion ... ist das Opium des Volkes"-from the introduction of his work "Contribution to Critique of Hegel's Philosohpy of Right". From what I understand Marx to be saying -- 'religion' tends to calm people or keep them sedated, similar to the effects of an opiate. Religion is used to convince people to accept the conditions they are faced with in this life, and basically, not to rock the boat. Religion convinces people to accept and endure suffering and injustices in this life because heaven awaits them. It prevents the masses from questioning and ultimately changing the current ways allowing those in power to stay in power. Just as people who are physically injured receive relief from opiate-based drugs, religion has been used historically to calm and pacify a people who otherwise may have been rebellious. Regardless of your religious orientation, Christian, Jewish, Scientology, Atheist, etc., do you believe that this is still the case?
