Imagine this – small businesses struggling to fulfill a flood of delivery orders, lacking the infrastructure to meet the demand. DoorDash faced this challenge head-on when it began as Palo Alto Delivery. The dilemma? Small businesses, like the local macaroon shop, couldn’t handle the volume of orders due to staffing issues. This was DoorDash’s lightbulb moment, realizing a need for logistics to support local merchants. DoorDash’s founders started with delivering orders themselves, facing issues like parking and pickup processes. They expanded rapidly but encountered difficulties in oversight as the company grew. To succeed, they needed a local sales team, merchant partners, and customers in each zip code. Scaling to 50 states by 2019 and going public in 2020, DoorDash faced the struggle of maintaining effective communication and support as their platform grew. DoorDash’s solution was two-fold. First, they created a structure for ongoing communication with restaurant partners. This included local account representatives, a Restaurant Advisory Council, and a Chief Restaurant Advisor. Second, they prioritized a “merchant-first” approach, introducing tailored solutions like a multi-tier commission structure and the Storefront product. This product allowed restaurants to build turnkey websites with online ordering capabilities, providing a cost-effective way for more restaurants to afford DoorDash’s delivery system. My Big Takeaway: The DoorDash success story teaches us the importance of having a robust sales system. For CEOs, implementing effective sales leadership and strategies is crucial for revenue growth and impactful business operations. DoorDash’s commitment to ongoing communication, understanding merchant needs, and adapting its services based on feedback showcases the significance of a customer-centric approach in sales.
