Double Brood Invasion
from Ben Morris · host Ben Morris
Cody Hunter - Bassoon Performed 2/12/2026 in Cole Concert Hall In 2024, two broods of cicada —Brood XIII (the Northern Illinois Brood) and Brood XIX (the Great Southern Brood), emerged simultaneously out of the ground in a simultaneous event that hadn’t happened since 1803. Each kind of cicada has a unique sound, including the endless high-pitched buzz of the Magicicada cassini and the percussive clicking of the Magicicada septendecula, but the most distinctive of the 17-year periodical cicada calls is that of the Magicicada septendecim, or the Pharoah Cicada, with a unique “phar----oh” descending call. That sound features heavily in the fixed media in Double- Brood Invasion and as a descending motif in the bassoon part.
