She completed her psychiatric training in the West of Scotland, going on to spend more than two decades as a consultant in paediatric liaison psychiatry at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow. Dr Lockhart is a Consultant with The Edinburgh Practice and was Vice-Chair and Chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in Scotland's Child and Adolescent Faculty, followed by Chair of the UK Royal College of Psychiatry Child and Adolescent Faculty. She worked as Clinical Advisor for CAMHS with the Scottish Government from 2018 – 2021. She has been active in teaching, training and research and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow. Dr Lockhart was awarded the Royal College of Psychiatrists' President's Medal 2025 and the RCPsych Child and Adolescent Team of the Year 2017.
