She earned her PhD from the University of Colorado at Boulder, focusing on environmental chemistry. In 1996, Hansen joined 3M's Environmental Lab, where she played a crucial role in identifying and characterizing PFAS contamination in the environment. Her pioneering work on PFAS has been widely cited, contributing significantly to our understanding of these "forever chemicals."
