Dr Michelle Dickinson: Do you wear shoes in your house?
from The Sunday Session with Francesca Rudkin · host Newstalk ZB
Do you wear shoes in the house? There is debate with some scientific evidence to help with your decision. https://theconversation.com/wearing-shoes-in-the-house-is-just-plain-gross-the-verdict-from-scientists-who-study-indoor-contaminants-177542 The article was written by two environmental chemists who have spent a decade examining the indoor environment and the contaminants people are exposed to in their own homes. They found that by wearing your outdoor shoes indoors you can bring in microorganisms including some antibiotic-resistant germs as well as e-coli from faecal matter. They also suggested that you could be bringing in cancer-causing toxins from asphalt road residue as well as endocrine-disrupting lawn chemicals. In addition to these, the authors also found the risk of bringing in disinfectant chemicals, microplastics, perfluorinated (forever) chemicals and even lead and radioactive elements from outdoor soil. For those worried about a stubbed toe or cold feet, the authors suggest having a pair of indoor-only shoes which are put on at the door, however, they do agree that the risks involved with these shoe-attaching contaminants is small and so if you do like to wear your outdoor shoes indoors it probably isn't going to cause you any significant harm.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
