First Thing is First | Gauteng is ON FIRE under the grip of the third wave with a surge in the number of Covid-19 infections and hospitalisations at both private and public health facilities in and around Joburg.Gauteng Premier David Makhura on Monday said the "province is burning" amid staggering Covid-19 infections, warning that residents should not take the third wave lightly.  The  South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has been deployed to assist in the province’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This comes as Gauteng is battling to contain the third wave of COVID-19 infections.More than 5 000 people are currently hospitalised in Gauteng with more than 12 000 deaths having been recorded since the start of the pandemic.There have been calls for stricter lockdown regulations including an outright ban on alcohol, but the Gauteng government indicated that it would oppose such actions because this could be detrimental to the economy of the province.Guest: Dr Mvuyisi Mzukwa, Vice Chairperson of South African Medical Association (SAMA)
