Dr. Ryan Timmins - World renowned Sport Scientist on hamstring injury and prevention.

from How did you get into sport? · host Luis Resa

Send us Fan MailDr. Ryan Timmins is one of the prominent sport scientists and is sought after across the globe by some of the biggest clubs in the A-League, AFL, NRL and the English Premier League, to name a few, for his research in hamstring injury prevention and management. But what most don’t know about Ryan is outside of the incredible research he has contributed to the industry he has also been involved with several professional sporting teams in Australia holding positions across multiple departments such as S&C, Medical, Football Operations and Management. This is a rare interview into Ryan’s background being part of the inner sanctum of many well-known sporting organisations and not just through his research but also through the various roles he’s held which allows him to provide a unique and comprehensive insight into the world of high performance. Highlights from the episode…His first role in sport started with strategically working in a physio private practice that serviced the Brisbane Roar in the A-League.Ryan and I share stories of how going from washing towels, rubbing backs, cleaning dressing rooms and getting paid nothing was the gateway into the world of sport. Ryan talks about the importance of drawing a line between staying professional and being mates with athletes especially when working everyday together with athletes of similar age, backgrounds and interests. After completing his sport science degree Ryan turned down multiple offers to do a PhD in Queensland and instead took the risk of quitting his role at the Brisbane Roar and moving to Melbourne to complete his PhD. While completing his PhD he decided to work for Melbourne Victory FC for a year for NO money which eventually led to a 7 year paid role with the club, meeting his wife and winning several A-League grand finals.“If you want to be in the conversation, you have to be in the room”.  The power of being available which then leads to opportunities.Ryan and I talk about how it is important to realise that money is not the only remuneration you can receive in sport.  After 7 years at Melbourne Victory FC Ryan was made redundant and applied for a role at Western United as Football Operations Manager and went on to win another Championship. Ryan talks about why he continues to work in these alternative roles outside of his more recognised sport science/teaching roles.Having been in the inner sanctum of many clubs Ryan finishes by providing insight of what the world’s best high performance teams do well.People mentioned: Tony Shield: https://research.qut.edu.au/sportscience/people/anthony-shield/David Opar: https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-opar-09a04269/?originalSubdomain=auRyan Timmins contact details:ACU website: https://www.acu.edu.au/research-and-enterprise/our-research-institutes/sprint-research-centre/our-people/dr-ryan-timminsLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryan-timmins-a39ba851/Host: Luis ResaContact me on:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/luis-resa-a975196b/Email: [email protected] for listening and please leave a review.
