Phil Lesh - Audio Biography Inception Point Ai Phil Lesh, the bassist and founding member of the Grateful Dead, shaped an era of music and influenced the American cultural landscape in ways that remain vibrant today. From his early years in Berkeley, California, through his groundbreaking work with the Grateful Dead and later musical pursuits, Lesh’s journey reflects a life dedicated to innovation, community, and the profound impact of music. Early Life and Musical Influences Born: March 15, 1940, in Berkeley, CaliforniaDied: October 25, 2024, at age 84 Phil Lesh grew up in a musically rich household, which laid the foundation for his later explorations into various genres. His father, a skilled carpenter, and his mother, a pianist, encouraged him to engage with music early on. Initially, Lesh gravitated towards classical music, particularly enjoying the works of composers like Igor Stravinsky and Bela Bartok. By the time he was in high school, Lesh was an avid trumpet player, and he soon developed an interest in jazz, SOBs SOBs S.O.B.’s, also known as Sounds of Brazil, is a live music venue in the lower Manhattan neighborhood of SoHo. It was opened by owner and director Larry Gold in June 1982. SOBs has welcomed some of the music industry's past and current superstars to its stage. Drake, Phil Lesh, Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Cardi B, Lauryn Hill, John Legend, Emily King, and many more have all started their careers here.
