A Leitrim Sinn Fein Councillor is urging the government to reconsider ending cost of living assistance payments. Cllr Padraig Fallon says the harsh reality is that many people are finding it difficult to make ends meet at present. Nationally there were 331 thousand households behind on their electricity payments at the end of May.It means the number of people in arrears on their electricity bills has now hit a record high.Another 175 thousand domestic gas customers are behind on their payments, according to figures from Sinn Féin.  The Drumkeerin based Councillor says the Government needs to take this information on board when it comes to finalising the details of budget 2026
