自五祖传衣钵时，神秀和六祖惠能的得法偈就反映了两种不同的见地，这个差别成为后来南顿北渐的思想渊源。顿教是从真心契入，直指人心，见性成佛；渐教则是从妄心着手，渐次深入，从认识妄心到解除妄心，乃至最终开悟。虽然在见地和方法上有顿渐之分，但觉性本身是没有差别，没有优劣的。
