Duncan's Story
from Blocked Britain · host Blocked Britain
Duncan, 34, from Huntingdon in the East of England, wanted to train as a nurse to serve his community's healthcare needs. Despite strong demand for NHS staff and his readiness to begin training, he found himself blocked by a system designed to fail. Health Education England's training budget was deliberately constrained by HM Treasury spending limits that treat public investment as a cost to be minimised rather than the means by which trained healthcare workers reach the wards that desperately need them. The training infrastructure existed. Qualified instructors were available. What was missing was a central government willing to fund the places. This episode examines how Westminster's refusal to invest in NHS workforce development leaves both aspiring healthcare workers and patients locked out of the care they need.
