Dynasty Sports Life Ep. 30 The Blender on Rookie Drafts

from Dynasty Sports Life · host In This League

Show notes: In episode 30, Jesse gives thoughts on fantasy rookie drafts across dynasty sports. We are headed into draft season for football, basketball and hockey. Topics discussed include: What can we learn from pro sports GMs about drafting? Are we better or worse than the pros are at drafting? How can we leverage the difference between our position and pro GMs to 'outdraft' the experts? In part two of the episode we talk about the actual value of rookie draft picks by looking at the average value by pick number in pro drafts (spoiler - in every sport it starts at the top, drops like a rock, and then smooths out to a low, steady baseline of mostly non-contributing players.) We talk hockey, basketball, football, and baseball rookie draft pick and likelihood of success at different parts of the draft. Finally we talk about what to do with all this when you actually start a rookie draft. When is it better to have a pick and make a selection and when should you trade your picks away? Is it a good idea to trade away all your picks and then skip out on the research for the year? What does it mean to take a player who will have to eat up a roster slot while they develop?
