10 Ways to Fight Fair by Cindy Hyde, MA www.CindyHyde.com Here are 10 rules to follow for fighting fair.  Be Attentive  Avoid making things worse. Be aware of potential escalations. Be prepared to take a break or walk away for a while and calm down. Be Courteous Use your good manners don't be rude. Highly regard the other person. Be pleasant and polite, not sarcastic. Be Expressive Express your feelings with words. Express opinions and thoughts calmly. Speak clearly and be positive. Be Focused Focus on all the potential solutions. Focus on a mutual compromise.  Focus on peace and reconciliation. Be Grateful Be grateful and thankful. Acknowledge the good in one other. Support and affirm them. Be Listening Face them and use eye contact.  Hear what they are saying. Repeat it. Actively listen, don't think about your response. Be Kind Be gentle and thoughtful without contempt. (Rolling eyes, Huffing, etc.). Be supportive and try to smile.  Don't use absolutes. (Never, Always...) Be Relevant Don't bring up the past. At all.  Acknowledge their point of view/idea. Stay on topic. One thing at a time. Be Respectful Remember you both have worth. Be sincere, honest and fair without a bad attitude or overly emotional.  Don't use degrading language. Be Understanding Take responsibility for your actions.  If you're wrong own it and apologize. Be quick to forgive if they are wrong and move on.
