Το τρέξιμο δεν ήταν τυχαία επιλογή στη ζωή της Μαρίας Πολύζου γιατί τελικά για εκείνη ήταν ο μοναδικός τρόπος να φύγει από τα σκοτάδια της σεξουαλικής κακοποίησης που βίωνε επαναλαμβανόμενα ως παιδί από τον πατέρα της. Προσπάθησε να δώσει τέλος στη ζωή της, δύο φορές. Μια φορά στα 12 έτη της και την επόμενη στα 14 διότι δεν μπορούσε ούτε το σώμα ούτε και η ψυχή της να αντέξει τους βιασμούς από τον πατέρα της. Τόσο τα αδέρφια της όσο και η μητέρα της κακοποιούνταν από τον πατέρα της και η κατάσταση στο σπίτι της τρομακτική, απόκοσμη και εξαιρετικά βίαιη από όλες τις απόψεις. Ο αθλητισμός και εν συνεχεία ο πρωταθλητισμός της χάρισαν τη διαφυγή που έψαχνε ούτως ώστε να κυνηγήσει τα όνειρά της και να μείνει πιστή σε αυτά. Η πρώτη φορά που είπε «μπράβο» στον εαυτό της δεν ήταν μετά τα αδιανόητα αθλητικά της κατορθώματα αλλά αφότου νίκησε τον καρκίνο. Μητέρα της θεωρεί την Παναγία ενώ με την βιολογική της μητέρα από μικρή ηλικία δεν ξαναμίλησε ποτέ.
