E02: Your Life as an Act of Worship: Identity and Boundaries

from Kingdom Flow · host Kyle Jones & Ian Sperry

When you received Jesus Christ, you became one of God’s children. From that moment on, your life became centered on a newfound identity pushing you to live in worship every day. However, with the enemy so insistent on stealing that identity away from you, how do you maintain a worshipful standard of life to the Lord? In this episode of Kingdom Flow, Kyle and Ian talk about what it looks like to truly step into your identity as a child of God. They also share many important insights on the necessity of being intentional in getting closer to God while establishing boundaries to detach from the temptations of the world. While there is no longer condemnation in failing, there is a yearning in every Christian to receive more of God’s glory always. Join them in this conversation about how you can live your life every day as a form of worship to the Lord. Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation: You are not defined by your performance Your greatest identity is being a child of God Be more intentional in carving time for the Lord Set boundaries to maintain a Christian standard of life Episode Highlights: [03:02] The Emptiness in a Performance-Driven Identity It can be tempting in today’s society to live out an identity based on the roles you perform, but who are you beyond these? Even Christians struggle with a performance-driven identity, believing by mistake that their identity as Christians is based on how many people they baptized or invited to church. However, the Bible clearly articulates that your identity is in Christ. [16:39] Stepping Into the Christian Identity Jesus Christ is the son of God, and when you received Him, you also became one of God’s children. This means that the identity you need to live out is being His child, and when a child messes up or performs poorly, the father does not castigate him. Instead, he cleans up after the child’s mess and embraces him with loving arms anyway. [22:00] The Standard of Intentionally in Seeking God No longer from a desire to perform but from a yearning that a child has for a father, you are called to be intentional in seeking God in your everyday life. This means carving out time to pray and read the Bible, making sure to be present in church gatherings, and making intentional efforts every day to receive from God, so you could worship, and He would be glorified. [30:41] Establishing Your Boundaries In an intentional effort to live a life of worship, you need to establish boundaries. You cannot be in communion with God without separating yourself from the world. Keep watch of your relationships with the opposite sex or the types of content you consume every day. Notable Quotes: [19:19] “When we accept Christ, we’re not perfect, but He helps us clean our mess.” [34:28] “The standard that God has, we can never reach that standard. The only person that reached that standard as a human was Jesus Christ.” [40:53] “Boundaries make it easier to live in a standard. Boundaries make it easier to live with integrity. Boundaries make it easier to live with conviction. Boundaries make it easier, as our life is a worship song to the Lord.” [44:54] “From identity builds character, and from character builds boundaries, and from that, our act of worship is truly, truly giving back.”

The Ten Commandments Chad Boersema Many focus on MAKING disciples, we hope to help in the process of BEING a disciple of Jesus. Understanding the ten commandments can be a good place to reflect on, as they were one of Israel's first introductions to learning how to relate to God and live in His way. Jesus also references the commandments in his sermon on the mount saying, “...whoever does them [the commandments] will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:19) Looking forward to exploring these with you!
