E09: Part 1: Building a Lasting Family Legacy

from Kingdom Flow · host Kyle Jones & Ian Sperry

When you’re growing in Christ as a couple, the marriage becomes sweeter. But what happens when both of you are not on the same page? Well, trust that transformation happens when you least force it – and by the grace of God, just allow your own transformation to inspire your spouse to know God more. Then together, you will be building your legacy as you’re living by faith and growing confidence in Christ. In this episode of Kingdom Flow, our lovely wives, Michaela Sperry and Lindsay Jones, are joining this discussion as they share their own spiritual journeys and how they’re living out their faith as our wives, as moms, and as women. Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation: Stop making excuses and spend time with the Lord You and your spouse are each other’s greatest form of accountability There’s a blessing when you listen to the leadership of your spouse. Sometimes, you have to create boundaries to protect what you have. When we grow in Christ, our true self naturally comes out. Highlights: [10:33] Spending Time with the Lord Every woman is so busy, whether you're a stay-at-home mom or you’re working, the checklist of things to do is just never-ending. But we’ve got to stop making excuses and make it a priority to spend time with the Lord. Once we’re able to make that happen, it’s amazing how everything will just fall into place. Carve out some time, preferably in the morning, and it just helps set yourself up for the day. There might be days you feel exhausted and that’s okay, don’t condemn yourself. [16:33] A True Partnership It has to start with us. But in order for us to get and go where God wants us to go, we've got to have our helpmate on board with us, too. When couples get together, things begin to move at a new level and we begin to see true life change and family change – and then legacy begins to happen. [18:29] Listening to the Leadership of Your Spouse Sometimes, it requires patience in seeing your spouse go in the same direction as you do. Transformation can happen without you having to force anything on your spouse. Just let them experience your own transformation and their own transformation will just begin to happen. [22:56] The Importance of Keeping Boundaries When the Holy Spirit is moving in your life radically as a family, things just start to shift. That could mean having to put some boundaries and making difficult decisions in order to keep what you have. For instance, that could be letting go of relationships when they don’t align with your values anymore. Choose to spend your time with people who are going to contribute or build you up in what your family is trying to accomplish. [35:45] Communicating with Empathy Communication really matters. Make sure you and your spouse are coming in with empathy and doing whatever you can to work together. Then you will receive the ultimate gift of peace, something a lot of couples desire. Notable Quotes: [11:27] - “Everything just falls into place when you prioritize spending time with God.” [20:12] - “There's so much blessing in it if you will just listen to the leadership of your spouse.” [22:56] - “When the Holy Spirit is just moving in your life so radically as a family, things just start to shift.” About the Guests Michaela Sperry is Ian’s wife, a retired teacher, and a full-time mom of three kids, while Lindsay Jones is Kyle’s spouse, who works as an assistant principal in the Houston area and a mom to three kids.

The Ten Commandments Chad Boersema Many focus on MAKING disciples, we hope to help in the process of BEING a disciple of Jesus. Understanding the ten commandments can be a good place to reflect on, as they were one of Israel's first introductions to learning how to relate to God and live in His way. Jesus also references the commandments in his sermon on the mount saying, “...whoever does them [the commandments] will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:19) Looking forward to exploring these with you!
