He walked around the room for a long time, recalling, smiling, and then the memories turned into dreams, and the past in his imagination mingled with what would come. Anna Sergeyevna didn't appear in his dreams, but followed him everywhere, like a shadow, watching him. With his eyes closed, he saw her as if she were alive, and she seemed more beautiful, younger, more tender than she had been; and he himself seemed better than he had been then, in Yalta. In the evenings, she looked at him from the bookcase, from the fireplace, from the corner; he heard her breathing, the gentle rustle of her clothes. On the street, he followed women with his eyes, searching for someone who resembled her... And a strong desire to share his memories with someone began to torment him. But at home, he couldn't talk about his love, and outside of home, there was no one to talk to. Not with tenants or at the bank. And what could he say? Did he love her then? Was there anything beautiful, poetic, instructive, or even just interesting in his relations with Anna Sergeyevna? And so he had to speak vaguely about love, about women, and no one guessed what it was about, and only his wife would raise her dark eyebrows and say:  — Тебе, Димитрий, совсем не идет роль фата. "Dmitry, the role of a philanderer does not suit you at all." One night, as he was leaving the Doctor's Club with his partner, an official, he couldn't resist and said: — Если б вы знали, с какой очаровательной женщиной я познакомился в Ялте! "If you only knew what a charming woman I met in Yalta!" The official got into his sleigh and drove off, but suddenly turned around and called out:  — Дмитрий Дмитрич!"Dmitry Dmitrich!"  — Что?"What?"  — А давеча вы были правы: осетрина-то с душком!"You were right earlier: the sturgeon was a bit off!"Telegram Channel - https://t.me/befluentinrussian
