E178: Asheville's Green Man Brewery

from Beer Guys Radio Craft Beer Podcast · host Beer Guys Media

Send us Fan MailGreen Man Brewery was the first taproom in Downtown Asheville Lovingly dubbed Dirty Jack's, Green Man Brewery's original taproom opened in downtown Asheville, NC in 1997.  nearly 201 years later the Green Mansion opened, an impressive three-story brewery and tasting room with a "Brewtique" for souvenirs and beer to-go. Green Man brewers Geoffrey Ebner and Kyle McKenzie stopped by the Beer Guys studio on a recent trip to Atlanta, with plenty of Green Man beer in tow.  We sampled through brews like their Wayfarer IPA, Hazy Cosmic Jive (part of their Hazy Homage series), Keller Pilz, and Moe's Goes Camping (a smoky s'mores stout collaboration brewed with Moe's Original BBQ) while Ebner and McKenzie share their love for lagers and dive bars. The guys also share with us some of the brewery's environmentally-friendly initiatives like using high-efficiency equipment where possible, recycling all packaging and pallets, and buying grain in bulk to reduce the number of shipments they receive.  Brewery's produce a lot of waste in spent grain.  Fortunately, many brewers (like Green Man) partner with local farmers to use this grain as feed for livestock.  Some of the animals raised on the grain make their way into burgers at the nearby White Labs Kitchen & Tap. Ask the Brewers Homebrewers are a big reason the American craft beer scene is as awesome as it is today.  Through the creativity and experimentation of homebrew, we've had amazing new styles of beer created.  The Green Man brewers are huge supporters of homebrewing and have a section on their site to ask a brewer any questions you have.  Ebner and McKenzie warn us that they can get long-winded with some of their answers. Through the explosive growth of the Asheville beer scene, Green Man has been a staple.  Stop in for a pint of their classic ESB or see what experimental beers are on tap.  If you're a soccer fan you'll be in luck, if there's a game on TV it will be on in the taproom.  Hail United!
