In the late 1960's and early 1970's, the self-proclaimed Zodiac Killer was responsible for at least five murders in Northern California. He cultivated his notoriety by sending taunting letters and cryptic ciphers to all the major newspapers in the California Bay Area until 1974, when they abruptly stopped. Despite an intensive search for the killer, no one was ever arrested and the case remains open. The mystery surrounding the Zodiac Killings has led to countless books and several movies.
