E407: Bakari Sellers Full Interview

from Money Making Conversations Master Class · host Rushion McDonald

Bakari Sellers is a Morehouse graduate, and he made history in 2006 when, at just 22 years old, he defeated a 26-year incumbent State Representative to become the youngest member of the South Carolina state legislature and the youngest African American elected official in the nation. In 2010 he was named to TIME's "40 Under 40." In 2014 and 2015, he was named to The Root 100 "Most Influential African Americans." he practices law with the Strom Law Firm, LLC in Columbia, SC and is a Political Commentator at CNN. He is the author of a great book that I read this week, and we will be talking about during his interview, MY VANISHING COUNTRY: A Memoir. "My Vanishing Country" is a memoir of his childhood in rural South Carolina and his education from movement leaders, including Julian Bond, co-founder of the Institute for Southern Studies, publisher of Facing South. In it, he explores how two high-profile incidents of racial violence — the Orangeburg Massacre of 1968 and the Charleston Massacre of 2015 — have impacted his life and his work. He is on the show to discuss, civil unrest and his new book My Vanishing Country which is also a love letter to fatherhood—to Sellers' father, his lodestar, whose life lessons have shaped him, and to his newborn twins, who he hopes will embrace the Sellers family name and honor its legacy.
