Early Adoption of Diabetes Technology & Why Its Important

Early CGM and AID adoption in type 1 diabetes: what happens when you start from day one instead of waiting? Kate Neal, Clinical Services Manager at Insulet, is joined by Dr Halis Kaan Akturk from the Barbara Davis Centre for Diabetes in the US to unpack how early initiation of CGM and AID is changing and improving outcomes for patients. In his clinic, CGM is introduced at diagnosis, with many patients moving onto AID within the first few months. Drawing on large cohort studies, Dr Akturk explains how starting in the first three months leads to lower A1C, fewer severe hypoglycaemic events, and reduced risk of DKA, with those improvements sustained over time. The conversation also explores recent guideline updates from the American Diabetes Association, which now place a much stronger emphasis on early access to diabetes technology rather than delaying adoption. Alongside the data, this episode gets into the reality of making it work. From first visit CGM starts and remote follow ups, to using simplified bolusing and custom targets, Dr Akturk shares how his team meets patients where they are and removes barriers to getting started.
