Earnings season starts with a bang

Earnings season kicked off with a bang, US big banks printed record profit. On the data front, US inflation surprised to the downside in June, giving investors a reason to celebrate as Treasury yields fell and expectations for further Fed tightening eased. But the latest inflation relief could prove short-lived as falling energy prices did most of the heavy lifting, while escalating tensions in the Middle East are already pushing oil prices higher again.
