Easing back on X (TLP 2024w23)

from Lead Prompt Podcast · host John Collins

Ten years ago I wrote about my desire to ease back from Twitter, now I feel the same way about X. What has really changed? Notes: Recently I have become disillusioned about posting content on X, because the engagement rate is so low. For example, I can post on X and get 50 views in 24hrs from 9k followers, or post a short video on YouTube with 20 subscribers and get 500 views in the same period. Follow count on X is now utterly meaningless as a signal of how much engagement you will actually get. X is just not worth it anymore, as the return on the time invested there is terrible. If you look at the For You tab on X, you can see that the algorithm promotes accounts posting recycled memes, or recycled videos designed to provoke a shocked reaction. Meanwhile original content producers like me are finding it increasingly difficult to reach an audience on X. Over ten years ago I wrote about my desire to ease back from Twitter, now I feel the same way about X. What has really changed? I will read that article to you now (ref: https://techleader.pro/a/395-Easing-back-from-Twitter), and please ask yourself the following two things as I read it: What has really changed about Twitter / X in the past ten years? How many of the issues I raise in that article are still true today? (article read) The last time I felt this way, I deleted my Twitter account permanently. Note my current account is a new one. I am not planning to delete my account again, but will lock it in private mode and take a break for a few months before deciding what to do with it. In the interim, I am hoping that X does something to entice original content producers to use X as their main platform, because right now the value proposition is too poor. Did I mention I am paying for this account? What I am working on this week: Added query highlighting support to greppr.org Media I am enjoying this week: The Revenge of the Rose by Michael Moorcock.
